Playing god essays

Playing god papers On February 24, 1997, researchers at the Roslin Institute in Edinburg, England report that they had cloned a grown-up mamal just because. This was only one of many visually impaired jumps in science that mankind has made. As we race foward in our descisions to make life, we negelct to take a gander at the concequences of our activities. Notwithstanding taking out hereditary assorted variety, cloning is strictly and morally off-base. First before I start I ought to characterize what precisely a clone is. Groliers reference book characterizes a clone as a decendant delivered agamically from a solitary creature or plant. Agamically, as in common. What we characterize as cloning is close to mechanical propagation. We make indistinguishable duplicates of living beings as the unfortunate chore. We need to hereditarily make the ideal pig, one that yeilds tasty meat, never becomes ill and fits in with the entirety of our needs. We need to do that again and again, tons of indistinguishable duplicates. All without taking a gander at the concequences. Indistinguishable creatures need decent variety. Every one of them could kick the bucket from a solitary plauge in light of the fact that there is no way of one of them having an invulnerability. One case of this was the Irish potatoe starvation of the mid nineteenth century. The lower class Irish depended on a solitary assortment of potatoe and when a plauge cleared it out, thousands kicked the bucket from starvation. The slow advancement, natural selection, nature has set this up which is as it should be. It occurs so species can create and advance to accommodate their condition. On the off chance that we engineer our own development we stop what nature may have expected for us. By picking something that appears to be flawless now, we may pass up what is better for us later on. Everything has an explanation, and just God realize what that is. At the point when I talk about religion and cloning I need to go right back to the start. The holy book expresses that God basically cloned Eve, as he needed to make a lady and a spouse for Adam. So if it's appropriate for God, huamns ought to have the option to do I. ... <! Playing God articles Hereditary qualities, playing god or improving the human species? Is it option to meddle with our qualities? Is the Human culture prepared for hereditary qualities? These inquiries have been the focal point of conversation about hereditary qualities in the previous not many years. The start of another age managing hereditary qualities is going to begin, a few people accept that our general public is prepared for the new unrest, however most accept that our general public isn't prepared. Regardless of if our general public is prepared or not, the new period of hereditary qualities is coming. At the point when individuals consider hereditary qualities they consider blood and gore films where individuals are changed, yet as a general rule hereditary qualities is the logical investigation of how physical, biochemical, and conduct characteristics are transmitted from guardians to their posterity. A case of hereditary qualities is the Human Genome Project, which is an overall coordinated effort to increase an essential comprehension of the hereditary outline of the individual. The Human Genome Project is one of not many ventures where the Universities and organizations all around world have cooperated to pick up information for the better of the human culture. The primary utilization of hereditary designing, despite everything utilized today, was particular rearing of creatures and plants beginning back during 10,000 BC. In northern Iraq where people tamed canines, cows, sheep, ponies, and plants were breed specifically to build food creation, security, and exchanging. He didn't utilize data from shopper reports, yet Instead utilized accessibility heuristic to allude to his sibling parents in law case and put together his judgment with respect to that. Occasions that are effectively accessible inside ones psyche are more probable judged and to happen as indicated by this heuristic. The inclinations, which are caused inside accessibility heuristic, are the predisposition because of the simple retirement of the examples where the boss had the option to recover Just one body of evidence against the negative of the Volvo. Also, notice the inclination because of adequacy of the quest for the review procedure. This doesn't mean I will go to my loved ones and state that this café Is awful don't eat there, for In all sincerely It Is not an awful eatery and for some odd reason I had one terrible shrimp that brought about an agitated stomach. I would end this model with an issue of â€Å"who has this not occurred to t any eatery where one NAS and terrible t some time? The sort tot heuristic that will be utilized here to impact my boss will be modification and securing. While altering ones convictions considering new data there should be strong proof against it. Lacking alteration due to tying down can prompt mix-ups. I accept the examination I have done is strong data to supplications and impact my chief to help adjust his perspective in regards to Vole's (Plops, Chip. 13, 1993).When I meet with my chief indeed, I will impact his choice about Vole's with these realities and insights, for example, with more extra room, overhauled because of criticism from past years, premium little car new security highlights with more strength, a vulnerable side data framework as included just as another programmed risk cautioning extra discretionary fun contraptions, for example, SIRIUS Satellite Radio and elite sound framework (new stands its ground against other game cars, vehicles', 2007), for most purchasers, the standard suspension arrangement gives a lot of rushes while giving all the more padding over potholes when driving along, while yes it might not have the renown or physicality of its German enemies, this Volvo costs less, has style with a superior vibe, with updates included the cost may go up, yet for an organization vehicle one ought to be sensible, the base motor will be flawlessly satisfactory ND essential bundle, this Volvo has marginally preferred mileage over the 2. 41 (Edmunds, 2007), Keeping as a top priority while all vehicles have their idi osyncrasies and hiccup one ought to by and by test-drive a vehicle before shaping a conclusion on what the person in question thinks. With all the advantages and disadvantages, numerous individuals will frame their own choices at long last. The not many that I have inquired about have said that the Volvo S'40 is refined, tasteful, incredible and runs Just fine. Indeed, even without a somewhat increasingly incredible motor, it is as a lot of a â€Å"real† Volvo as any vehicle is a â€Å"real† vehicle. By using the heuristic technique f mooring and alteration, I feel that I can show my manager that what befell his brother by marriage has happened to numerous with any vehicle. I would have him contemplate on that for a piece, while simultaneously giving him what others need to state about the Volvo. I would educate him regarding the examination I did through nectars. Com, Edmunds. Com, and Flavors. Com.By educating him regarding this, I am utilizing numerous grapple focuse s to help settle on an official conclusion that the Volvo is the best approach. At the point when one makes or Judges a person or thing dependent on distinctiveness or ongoing occasions, they utilize accessibility heuristic. To assist one with altering their perspective or perspective we need to stay the manner in which change is utilized and when a choice should be made it is made by acclimations to this grapple or beginning stage. The utilization of tying down and alteration may work much of the time, for example, this, however on occasion won't generally gauge enough to different elements (Plops, Chip. 13, 1993). Ideas for Kindergarten Science Fair Projects

Kindergarten science projects give kindergarten students the opportunity to explore science by making observations and predictions based on the observations. Concepts should be easy to understand and materials used in the science projects should be non-toxic and easy for small hands to manage. In many cases, kindergarten science involves group projects, so students can brainstorm ideas. Here are some examples of kindergarten science projects. Experiment with ColorEither offer students finger paints in the primary colors, clay, or food coloring solutions and ask them to predict what will happen when they mix two of the colors. What do they expect will happen when they mix an  unequal amount of colors? What if they mix all three colors? If possible, offer colored transparent sheets or tissue paper. Mixing colors of light produces very different results from mixing paints! Ask students what makes light different. This exercise offers a good opportunity to discuss the concept of a hypothesis. Ask kindergarten students to predict what will happen when different colors are mixed. Explain that one different between a guess and a hypothesis is that a hypothesis is based on information gathered from observations.Blow a Bigger BubbleAsk students if they think all bubble wands produce the same size and shape of bubbles. Test various bubble wands to see if their predictions are accurate. See if kindergarten students can make their own bubble wands from materials such as straw, strings, rolled and taped pieces of paper, etc. Which bubble wand produced the best bubble?Liquids and MixturesPrepare containers of oil, water, and syrup. Ask the kindergarten students to describe the properties of the liquids and to make predictions about what will happen if these liquids are mixed together. Ask the students to order the objects according to density, then drop each item into the wate r and see what happens.Explore MagnetismTalk about magnetism. Take a pair of bar magnets and ask students to predict which materials might be magnetic. Have the kindergarten students test objects for magnetism. Now ask a  student to predict what will happen when two magnets approach each other. Discuss the results.Diffusion and TemperaturePrepare a glass of hot water and a glass of cold water. Ask kindergarten students what they expect will happen when food coloring is dropped into a glass of water. Do they think there will be a difference between what happens if the temperature of the water is changed? Investigate what happens when the food coloring is dripped into each glass and discuss the process of diffusion.Describe an EcosystemWhat is an ecosystem? This science project involves having kindergarten students come up with a definition for an ecosystem. Then, go outside, measure off a square meter of ground, and have students catalog what is in that particular ecosystem . The concept of a food chain could be introduced as well.ClassificationScientists classify animals, plants, minerals, and stars according to similarities. Often, there are disagreements about the best way to group things. Offer students a variety of objects and ask them to classify them and explain how they were grouped. If students choose different groupings, open the discussion so students understand why it sometimes takes scientists hundreds of years to reach agreement. This exercise also demonstrates there may be more than one right way to accomplish a task in science.Star Versus PlanetIn the modern age, astronomers seek planets using high powered magnification and a variety of instruments that detect types of radiation. How do kindergarten students think early scientists knew the difference between stars and planets? Ask students to go outside and find at least one planet in the night sky. (McFarland, K. 2012) Inversely, this consistency can act as a liability in times of necessary change due to the amount of work required to implement change in the short term. A rapidly evolving external environment means organisations have to adapt their cultural practices to keep up with socio-political reform, legislation, competitive innovation and new management best practices preferred by the labor market. Socio-political issues have become a major staple in society, heavily contributing to the public perception of an organization. This in turn, can have dire consequences on an organization’s recruitment prospect, customer base and partnerships. Socio-political reform translates into anti-discrimination legislation regarding cultural practices and protection for certain demographics in the job market. Cultural Adaptation regarding these factors mean a fundamental change in the way employees think and behave. A consistent culture usually means having key senior employees, these employees may b e resistant as it may threaten their position or beliefs. In some cases, change directly threatens the roles of key employees positions. The emphasis on flatter management structures mean middle managers are now seen as redundant because of the trend freely

Essay on The God of Small Things Lessons of History

Time and space have always posed a threat to all creative artists. To move with time is the easiest way. To move back and forth is also not impossible. But to be timeless and space less- this is the real challenge. Yet any artist worthy of his vocation has in one way or another tried to resolve this riddle. How far he has succeeded is the real test of his genius. It does not simply mean neglecting the concept of linear time. Rather, it is all about a timeless and universal appeal of the human element the work contains. The author of The God of Small Things is, at the very outset it is clear, very keen on not being held up by the question of time. Various Issues of Data Privacy †Free Samples to Students

Question: Discuss about the Various Issues of Data Privacy. Answer: Introduction In computing terms, data is known as the information, which has been converted that would be efficient for processing or movement. As compared to the recent computers, the data is such information, which is converted into binary digital form. The data privacy is defined as the privacy of private information. The privacy of data is related to the personal data, which is stored on the computer systems. The privacy of various kinds of information is also known as the data privacy. The privacy is an ability of an individual or group in order to seclude themselves. The content of the information, which is considered as private can vary among individuals and cultures. The field of privacy moderately overlaps the confidentiality. These includes the concepts of proper usage along with information protection. In the recent times, the privacy of data is the major area of concern. The need for the maintenance of data privacy could be applicable to some personal collected information. This includes financial data of several organizations, criminal records, data of websites or business related information and medical records. The privacy of data is one such aspect of information technology, which deals with the ability of an individual or an organization in order to determine about what kind of data could be shared with third level parties. Data Privacy can be considered as an important aspect of the sharing of vital information. With the advancement in the field of technology, the vulnerabilities in the personal information of individuals and organizations have increased gradually (Bajaj, Sumeet and Radu Sion 2014). The privacy in information might be applied in several ways. This includes the use of encryption technology, authentications and masking of data. Each of these technology attempt to ensure that the information would be only available to those users who have authorized access. These measures of protectiveness of the valuable information are dedicated towards the ways to prevent the mining of data and the illegal access of private information. In the recent digital age, different organizations are applying the concept of the privacy of the data to some critical personal information. This might include various medical and health records, bank related data, credit and debit card numbers, social security numbers and many other kinds of vital information. The privacy of data is also important for different businesses as their information might include the data of the operations, financial information of the business and also the information about where they would be spending or investing their money. If private data is leaked to some unauthorized users, then worst things could happen. A breach of data at a government agency could put their secret information in the hands of the enemy. Data breach in the corporate sector could leak their data in the hands of their competitors. The main challenge of the privacy to the data is during protecting the preferences of the privacy of an individual. As the regulations and laws, which are related the Data Protection and Privacy are changing at a rapid pace, hence it is extremely important to keep updated with the changes in the law. It is also essential to continually keep a check with the compliance with the privacy of data and regulations of security. The privacy of data could be related to different types of data. These includes the privacy on the internet. Each and every personal information, which is shared on the internet is subjugated to privacy related issues. Financial related information is also sensitive, which may be used to conduct offline or online fraud. Medical records are also subjected to rigorous laws, which would address privileges to access to the user. As per the law, the systems of security and authentication are mostly required for individuals, who would process and the medical records of an individual (Bygrave 2014). Recommendation In order to safeguard the data from unauthorized users, there would be some recommendations. A single program should be used for multiple functions of the protection of data. An efficient backup methodology should be used in order to reduce the total time that would be required in order to perform the backup of the data and also enable a faster process of the restoration of the data. A web-based interface could also be used in order to manage the protection of the data for an enterprise from any computer that would be connected to the internet. Hence, from the above discussion it can be concluded that the privacy of the data is an important area of concern, which should be taken care of at an urgent basis. Data breach is a major area of concern in the recent times. Data from all over the world is being tried to be hacked by various unauthorized users. Hence, different security mechanisms should be taken into consideration regarded to the privacy of personal information. References Bajaj, Sumeet, and Radu Sion. Financial Management of Risk

There are numerous challenges entrepreneurs face seeking to succeed in business, in fact, these challenges are determined by the environment in which a business operates.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Financial Management of Risk specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Therefore, a business may be affected by either internal or external factors, whereby internal factors include factors emanating from the business structure, while external factors include those that are outside the business, and may emanate from other business organizations, or even political organization. For this reason, the choice of the environment is always critical when starting a business. Thus, the paper seeks to elaborate on the risk involved in moving business to Thailand or Louisiana, and review financial reports of Coca-Cola Company to highlight the management of risk involved in moving the business. Political instability in Thailand has b ecome a serious threat to business, thus entrepreneurs starting a business in this country face the risk of insecurity and violence (UK Trade and investment, 2012). Since the election in 2011, there have been incidences of unrest and bombings. On the other hand, the political structure in Louisiana is more stable compared to Thailand, hence providing a favorable business environment. Moreover, a significant factor affecting businesses in Thailand is bribery and corruption. Therefore, transferring a business to Thailand would mean that one has to take a significant risk hence discouraging foreign investors. In Louisiana, the levels of corruption are minimal, which is why it is more accommodating for investors than for Thailand (Coca cola Hellenic, 2012). In Louisiana, tax rates are higher as compared to those in Thailand; hence, transferring a business to this state would result to low returns and slow business growth. Consequently, this poses a limiting factor on investors, especial ly the small business entrepreneurs (Louisiana EDSP, 2012).Advertising Looking for report on business economics? These factors may be found within the business itself (internal factors), or outside the organization (external factors). However, there is a need to identify and deal with these factors because they are the key determinants of the business success. In this case, management is expected to compare company data obtained from various accounting periods, in order to identify the trend of business performance. In addition, managers also need to observe various changes in the market conditions during the financial periods to assist them in decision-making. A critical financial analysis of the Coca cola Company in dicates that there is a drastic fall in the revenue margins due to internal and external challenges the company is currently facing. An example of these internal factors is high manufacturing costs, which are contributing to high total costs resulting to low profits, and a substantial threat to the company (Verity, 2003). One of the external factors causing a drawback in the company progress is competition from other companies. There has been production of similar brands in the market such as PEPSI resulting to competition, which reduces the sales volume leading to low income. Moreover, a crucial factor is the political structures in the countries where products are sold. Since in some countries tax rates are high, there is an increase of price, which as a result, reduces demand leading to low sales, thus overall affecting the business negatively.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Financial Management of Risk specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/p age Learn More References Coca cola Hellenic. Organizational change, diagnosis and redesign

Organizational change, diagnosis and redesign Report abstract summary This report seeks to address the issue at hand of aligning Blue sky Media PLC for change and strategic renewal. It also aims at rebuilding the company and improving the position the company has previously held. There is also the aspect of restoration of employees trust in their leaders.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Organizational change, diagnosis and redesign specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The leaders have to adopt the innovative programmes of work publicized by behavioral scientists for other levels in organizations. When they work with other leaders, they have to rely increasingly on matrix organizations, temporary tasks groups, and project teams. The work most typically reflects what is described as an exploitative-authoritative organization. In contrast, other departments in companies are practising with the more open and practical participative group approaches described by Likert. Though it is not clear that these innovative designs may lead to increased productivity, growing evidence suggests such results for knowledge based workers in complex information environments. Introduction Blue-sky media PLC is an organization which is changing fast. This organizational change is stimulated by a major external force, for example, substantial cuts in funding, decreased market opportunity and dramatic increases in services. It has therefore undertaken technical, structural or strategic shifts in the organization to evolve to a different level in its life cycle, for example, changing from a highly reactive organization to a more stable proactive environment. Since this organization has been going through major changes in the aspects of employee’s relations to their leaders, the new CEO has to institute radical changes. There must be a paradigm shift in the manner of operations and also the method of handling issues, especially those related to new strategies f or change. Background Blue sky media PLC is faced with several factors which necessitate change. These are societal, environmental and internal factors. External factors for change are globalization, differences in workers, technological change, and managing work ethics. These are challenges that cause change in organizations. Internal forces for change originating inside the organization are recognizable in the form of signals indicating that something needs to be changed. For instance, reduction in effectiveness is a pressure to change. A company that incurs its last three months of the year loss in a span of a fiscal year is for sure forced to do something about it (Lopucki Whitford, 1990; Weiss, 1990).Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Strategic renewal is helpful in guiding the company to downsize, outsource, reengineer, and in corporate venturing, restructuri ng and rejuvenation. The major aim of strategic renewal is to see the company reposition itself in the market. This helps avoid threats like corporate takeover by other bigger companies. Human resource management will be vital to either institute measures to retain staff or retrench them through massive lay-offs. The company could also invent other measures aimed at staff appraisal depending on performance and put requisite steps accordingly. Leadership is essential in a successful corporate world. Visionary leaders help drive their companies to scaling professional and corporate heights. Leaders can either be democratic or autocratic. The company CEO who is democratic encourages workers contribution to the management and running of the company whereas the autocratic leader is strict and runs a one man show. Project objectives The first objective of the reorganization is to achieve a framework for financially stable business operations through a capital increase in the company. This will help widen the scope of operation. In addition, the reorganization brings the subsidiaries together directly under the umbrella of holding company making it possible to more efficiently manage the entire business, increase profitability, and strengthen the relationship between the company and its subsidiaries, while at the same time boosting the group’s sales. The second objective is maximization of the total value of the companys assets. There are two elements to this objective. First, it is desirable that as little value as possible will be dissipated during the reorganization process; to this end, it is desirable to minimize the time that the process will take and the direct and indirect costs incurred during this process. It is a good thing that, when the reorganization process ends, the companys assets will be allocated to their highest-valued use. This implies, among other things, that the assets will continue to function as a going concern if and only if the succ ess value exceeds the liquidation value and that, if the assets continue to function as a going concern, they will be employed under the maximum possible capital structure and the optimal governance structure. The third objective is highest division of total value: From an efficiency perspective, what matters is not only that the total bankruptcy value will be as large as possible but also how this value will be divided among the participants.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Organizational change, diagnosis and redesign specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The reason for this is that this afterwards division has important later consequences. In particular, to induce participants to provide finance to the company ex ante, it is expected that, in the event of ex post insolvency, the value will be divided according to the distribution or ranking of priorities that were agreed upon as a contract. Benefits and key outcomes A well-defined business process benefits a company in three dimensions. These are productivity, process, and people. Since the performance of a particular enterprise is a combination of the results of its processes. Well defined business processes contribute to a well-managed company. Productivity, process, and people are interdependent and synergistic. When people acquaint themselves well about the process and become experts in the process, productivity will increase, further increasing the morale of the workers (Gertner Scharfstein, 1991). Employees can be motivated through increased morale, which is very important as it increases their productivity. A percentage of between 10 and 70 is estimated to be the inefficiency effect. Improvement of productivity can be tremendously drawn from such inefficiency. Identification of the process activity to ensure error free work can be done since there is a clear definition of the business process. The people perform daily tasks which are pe rsistently changing. The prospects are finely-identified and invariable. However, in the event that errors take place their cause can potentially be identified by the organization. The moment the root cause of the errors is pointed out, they can be fixed by making adjustments on the process, which also puts off their recurrence. It is also very critical that the workers are motivated as it can help steer the process forward. The customers should be fully satisfied through a well-identified process. As a result, the customers become loyal to the business and feel satisfied, which brings about motivation (Lopucki Whitford, 1990). Assumptions/constraints While dealing with individuals you will find that most individuals want to develop their potential. In addition, they have interests for personal growth and development in case they are provided with supportive and challenging atmosphere. They like to make a higher level of contribution in achieving institutional goals than is normal ly acceptable.Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The manager asks, listens, supports, challenges, encourages risk-taking, allows failure, removes hindrances, gives freedom and responsibility, sets high standards and rewards success. This will in turn help to boost the morale of employees and aid in furthering successful organizational change. While dealing with groups, the manager needs to understand that one of the most reference groups for individuals is the working group; this includes peers and the boss. Majority wish to be accepted, and socialize with one or more small reference groups. They make bigger contributions to the groups’ efficiency and growth. The manager should let teams flourish; leaders should invest in groups/teams; adopt a team-leadership style rather than a one-on-one style. They ought to actively engage group members to help the leader in decision-making and problem-solving, by training them up suitably. Therefore this will help group members to deal with both positive and negative feelings hence solv e problems through mutual interactions. In designing and running an organization, traditional bureaucratic organization structures must give way to newer organizational designs. The needs and aspirations of employees ought to be addressed. Placing people first can lead to organizations that are more human, development oriented and encouraging. They are also high performing in terms of output, profitability and output quality. The result is that people are an organization’s most essential resource; they are the source of productivity and profits and should be treated with care. The current bargaining-based process appears to fall substantially short of the goal of maximizing total reorganization value. This happens both because value is often dissipated during the process and because the ultimate outcome of the process might not be value-maximizing. The redesign process under the existing rules takes substantial time (White, 1984; Weiss, 1990). In one re-organization of a majo r corporation, the administrative expenses of the company and of the creditors committee came to $3.5 million per month (Cutler Summers, 1988). Essentially, the company under reorganization might incur substantial indirect costs from functioning inefficiently during the reorganization process. Because the incentives of management during the process are generally not well aligned with the maximization of reorganization value, the management decisions during the process are likely to be distorted. In addition, because of the insolvency cloud hovering over the company, potential business partners may be reluctant to deal with the company or may demand especially favorable terms. Potential inefficiencies in the structure emerging out of the process: There are reasons to suspect that inefficiency costs might continue to be incurred even after the reorganization process ends, because the structure emerging out of the process might not be optimal. White (1994) suggests that the existing p rocess is biased in favor of continuation that is, the company is likely to continue as a going concern even if the most efficient route would be liquidation. Lastly, constraints under which the project must operate are based on the amount of resources available for implementation of aspects of the recommended strategies. However this can be addressed by ensuring that there are enough funds and requisite resources long before the organizational change, diagnosis and redesign is embarked on. Quality control Risk identified Response to risk By whom Time factor being a constraint Apportion enough time for each task to be completed The project coordinator Shortageof finances Seek alternative sources of finance The finance officer External interference Legal redress The legal consultant Other This proposal will be effective only if the expected conditions prevail and the outcomes are only achievable as per the procedure set (Lawrence Lorsch, 1967). A paper which compares and discusses the 3 works of Philip Roth Essay

A paper which compares and discusses the 3 works of Philip Roth Goodbye, Columbus Defender of the Faith and Eli, the Fanatic - Essay Example This is due to his fondness to his religion and his indifferent behavior towards the materialistic world. His character reveals a different sense of humor which is appreciated by all. I disliked the character of Brenda Patimkin because she is exactly the opposite of what Neil Klugman is. Her character portrays a sense of love towards the materialistic world. The character of Brenda is also portrayed as of a negative one by Philip Roth. This is because in the latter part of the story she decides to end the relationship with Neil Klugman due to their class differences. Another famous work by Philip Roth is the "Defender of the Faith". This story like the other works by Philip Roth also tells about religion and faith. It revolves around Sergeant Marx who fights in the World War II. After coming back from the war the Sergeant gets deeply involved in the Jewish religion. The Sergeant while serving in the army lost his faith in the religion and started doing things which were prohibited in his religion (like he started eating kosher). The story deals with the transformation of Marx from a man of principles and faith to a different man who forgets his religion and views after he joins the army. But soon after he re transforms to the real self when he realizes the need and the change. He analyzes three other Jewish trainees who held their religion and faith to a higher position then serving in the army. In this story I admire the character of Sergeant Marx. This is because of the firm belief of Marx in his principles. He is portrayed as a strong man who has gone through a lot of changes but who still has a firm belief in his religion and faith. The advantages taken by the trainees due to the kindness shown to them by Marx are a thing which I dislike in the story. The story Eli, the Fanatic tells us about the incidents and events occurred after a small ultra-Orthodox Yeshiva entered into a Jewish middle-class society in America. Philip Roth described the feelings of the members of the Jewish community. They were outraged and anxious as they worked hard to maintain peace in the community. He described their anxiety to protect their well-balanced community. Eli was a Jewish lawyer and people appealed him to restrict the outsiders from entering in their grounds. I like the way Roth explains the Jewish unawareness and crudeness of the modern culture and derides their suspicion. The story is distinct in a way it exemplifies the complexity of discussion about the educational standard of the Jewish society in a broken Jewish race. It clearly shows the difference of two different standards of Jewish community. One part of the community is well-educated and realistic, whereas the other part consists of superstitious and backward people. They rely on t he past and are not ready to forget their old traditions and values which is quiet important for their progress at present These three stories are based on the same themes but have different stories and different views. Goodbye Columbus deals with the issue of socio economic differences and classes. It deals with the love of people for the materialistic world that is a common sight in the world. While in the Defender of the Faith the writer tells about the transformation of a man. It tells about people like Grossbart who take advantage of kind people like Marx. In the third

American Community Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

American Community - Essay Example Indeed, and as the case of example of the Asian American immigrants establishes, not only are groups divided between themselves but, within themselves. Affirmative action, primarily targeting the African American community, is alternately viewed as a means of leveling the playing ground and as a discriminatory practice. Insofar as its proponents are concerned, affirmative action effectively ensures that colleges and universities, among other institutions, maintain a quota for African American candidates/students. In this way, African Americans are assured a place in institutions which would have otherwise been closed to them, largely because of their socio-economic circumstances and, as such given an invaluable opportunity for mobility. It is important to note here that proponents regard affirmative action as society's responsibility towards the African American community and, the least of that which is owed them. Opponents, on the other hand, inclusive amongst which are some members of the African American community, maintain that affirmative action is inherently discriminatory and racist. ... rican American community does suffer from a more restricted range of opportunities than does the majority and in light of the fact that latent racism may further constrain these opportunities, affirmative action is necessary. Indeed, rather than consider it a negative remark on the abilities of African Americans, it could be more properly understood as a policy predicated on a lack of faith in society's own ability to judge African Americans on their own merit, rather than their skin color. Further fortifying the importance of affirmative action is the status of African Americans on all of the socio-economic indicators versus that of a comparatively recent immigrant group, the Asians. In direct comparison to the African American's close to four centuries of history in the United States, the Asian American's history in the United States is short, with the first immigration wave dating to the mid-nineteenth century. This first influx of Asian immigrants was almost wholly comprised of Chinese manual laborers. Before this ethnic population could swell in numbers, Chinese immigration exclusionary measures were instigated in 1882, effectively halting Chinese immigration while encouraging Japanese Asian immigration. Eventually, however, discriminatory policies, halted Asian immigration to America from the 1920s to the 1960s. Anti-Asian sentiments, as which instigated the implementation of discriminatory and exclusionary immigration policies, reached its peak during World War II. Japan's alliance with Nazi Germany and most especially its attack on Pearl Harbor, led to widespread violence against Asian Americans. Indeed, following the said attack, Japanese Americans were interned in camps, unthinkingly classified as enemies despite the fact that many had been born in

Monroe doctrine Essay -- essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Monroe Doctrine was presented by President James Monroe in his annual address to Congress in 1823. Essentially its author, John Quincy Adams, who served as Monroe’s Secretary of State, wrote the Doctrine as a proclamation to the United States’ opposition of European colonialism. As of today the Doctrine has been re-interpreted and extended in a variety of ways to conform to the situation at hand, such as President Theodore Roosevelt’s Corollary.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 began the break up of the Spanish empires in the New World. From this point, many leaders guided their countries out of colonialism and led them into independence. These newly formed republics requested and expected diplomatic recognition from the United States and many Americans were in favor of the recognitions. Although, as previously identified, the United States had been warned that if it acknowledged the independence of these nations it would be seen as hostile actions towards Europe and both Monroe and Adams were unsure of going to war over countries that could not guarantee survival. Monroe and Adams were prepared to stay neutral as long as the other European powers did not interfere and let Spain and its colonies fight out their differences. The United States was in the process of obtaining East Florida from Spain after gaining West Florida in the Louisiana Purchase which the Spanish Minister Onis agreed to as long a s the United States promised not to assist the revolutionaries nor recognize their independence. Once the Transcontinental Treaty was ratified, Monroe began to extend recognition to the new Latin American republics stretched out over a few years so not to gain a European response.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In 1823, there was talk of Spain and France joining together for attacks on the new republics with the backing of Russia, Prussia, and Austria; fear of France becoming a power once again in the Americas encouraged the British to propose that the United States and Britain join together to warn off the two. Although Jefferson and Madison were in support of the offer, Adams was suspicious. In a cabinet meeting, Adams argued that it would be undignified to address Russia and France explicitly and fight in the shadows of the British, which won over the cabinet and Monroe delivered the Adams ... ...of the new Dominican Republic regime which owed over twenty million. When Roosevelt initially intervened, he took control over the country’s customs and receivership. Through this seizure, he distributed 45% of their revenues to their foreign creditors, although this occupation lasted for more than three decades. After this intervention the U.S. extended its power throughout the Caribbean when an opportunity arose. In 1930, a memorandum was issued stating that the United States did not have the power to intervene in the less able countries, unless European powers were threatening, which reversed the Corollary.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When the Monroe Doctrine was first introduced it seemed just as a warning to Europe not to interfere with the revolutions of Latin America, almost a gesture of solidarity and sympathy to the newly independent nations, but it was evident of American selfishness. Monroe and Adams carefully exempted the United States through careful wording when addressing the influence in the Western Hemisphere. The Doctrine was a valid basis for U.S. policy towards Latin America and became a fence to block out European expansion.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚

Karl Marx s View Of Contemporary Social Ills - 1674 Words

Power is present in every relationship and within each individual. Power is defined as a group’s ability to make another group its subject or to make some desired action either by consensus or force. Within any organization or government, some elite groups make decisions that directly or indirectly affect the lives of the larger mass. Studies have shown that such decisions in most cases are made to service the elite’s value and economic interests; property ownership or production. Such directions within the society cause resentment and inequality when the larger mass is not included in the decision making. The inequality makes the elite class to enforce their wishes and will on the less fortunate (Jessop 174). This essay seeks to give a†¦show more content†¦Between the two classes are small businesses which Marx calls them ‘petty bourgeoisie’, a group that is subject to either join the working class or the capitalists if surplus can be accommodat ed. In the ongoing industrial revolution the social surplus contributes to conflict where classes exist in the form of struggle for dominance or control over profits. Marx as a conflict theorist argued that the economy defines and dominates the societal structural change. He explained that social change and structure is a form of historical materialism that in the history come in two groups: the oppressor and the oppressed. Marx stated that the society is built on the exploitation of the oppressed. The struggle between the classes was what brought about the industrial revolution. This division and the struggle in the society have since never stopped, but instead there have been reestablishment of new classes, new oppression conditions, and new struggles replacing the old ones. The ancient societies e.g. the Roman and the Greek was built on slave labor and the two classes in conflict during those times were the slaves and patricians. The struggle between these classes resulted in th e development of feudal societies that were developed on serf’s labor under their opponent, the lords. The end of feudalism ushered in the capitalism, and Marx called the opposing forces in capitalist societies the
